Asset protection

Brightstone Trust Company provides trust administration, estate liquidation and custody services in Montreal. Complex estates leave no room for approximation: our team manages them rigorously, serving your objectives of protection and transfer of wealth, drawing on more than 20 years of expertise.

Our asset protection services

Inter vivos trusts

An inter vivos trust, created during your lifetime, is a legal structure used to protect assets, hold a business, plan the transfer of wealth and govern the pace of distributions. Flexible and adaptable, it is often the structure of choice for complex family and wealth situations. We handle its full administration, accounting and coordinate its tax filings.

Testamentary trusts

A testamentary trust is an estate planning tool that sets out how your wealth passes on after death, in a structured and, where possible, tax-efficient way. Created under your will, it takes effect on your death and remains in place for the period you set, protecting your beneficiaries’ interests in line with your wishes. Our team administers every testamentary trust with care and sensitivity to family dynamics.

Estate liquidation

Estate liquidation is the process of winding up a deceased person’s affairs. When an estate is complex, it calls for simultaneous command of law, taxation and accounting, along with sensitivity toward a grieving family. Brightstone Trust Company takes on every stage of the settlement, from the initial inventory to the final accounting, with rigour and humanity.

Custody services

Our custody services cover the safekeeping and administration of your financial assets: foreign currency accounts, securities and private fund interests. Brightstone Trust Company holds these assets through a network of Canadian and international institutional sub-custodians. We also prepare your financial reports and tax slips.

Our approach to asset protection

Our independence as an institutional trustee, combined with our global and multidisciplinary expertise, allows us to provide personalized strategic support to our Canadian and international clients, within a regulated framework.

I

A personalized approach

We never offer off-the-shelf solutions. Every client comes with a story of their own: family dynamics, expectations and unspoken concerns. Understanding them is where everything we build together begins.

II

Administration of complex assets

Family businesses, real estate held abroad, art collections and private fund interests do not follow the same rules as a securities portfolio. We administer each on its own terms, drawing on expertise across disciplines and applying the rigour and attention each asset requires.

III

Crossborder expertise

Through our network of established partners in Canada and abroad, we are uniquely placed to handle our clients' most complex situations. We also support and advise families with other personal projects, such as the acquisition of a real estate asset or a family’s relocation to another jurisdiction.

IV

Institutional and regulated framework

Our trust company operates under the oversight of Quebec's Autorité des marchés financiers, applying the strictest standards of governance, transparency and compliance, thus ensuring further peace of mind for our clients and partners.

Brightstone Trust Company

Our trust company works with high-net-worth families and individuals as well as communities, in Canada and internationally, to protect and pass on their wealth.

Our core business

Trust administration is our specialty. As a professional trustee, we bring full command of its legal, tax, accounting and operational dimensions.

A multidisciplinary team with real continuity

Professionals in law, finance, accounting, compliance and operations, many of whom have worked for our clients for over a decade.

Regulatory oversight and institutional governance

Brightstone Trust Company is licensed by  ministerial order of Quebec’s Minister of Finance and supervised by the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF), its financial regulator. A majority of its directors are independent, and its board is supported by audit, ethics and integrated risk management committees. This structure underpins rigorous governance.
